I bought two of these monsters from the Mexican grocery store yesterday. Are they open pollinated? I assume I can save the seeds? If yes, I'd love to share seeds with everyone. Has anyone grown these? How long is the season, how heat tolerant are they and what squash family are they in? Also, how do they taste? Do I need to run the meat through a food mill to remove strings before using for pies and soups? I'm going to bake one today, unless boiling would be better?
I'm so excited to try it! Kabocha squash is my very favorite squash but this one is much less expensive and there was a Mexican lady who bought a whole cartful, she said that these are the very best squash, better than kabocha or butternut. |

I'd bake it and see how stringy it is, I think baking is better than boiled. I've never grown or eaten one, it'll be interesting to see what you think of it. Better than butternut? So far my favorite squash, grew 3 other varieties this year and none were near as good as the butternut, let us know how it is. Thanks, I'll have to check it out, was it Food City or one of the others?

It was at the Ranch Pro Market. I love Kabocha, so dry, fine textured and sweet. I get those at Sprouts, Lee Lee's or sometimes Superstition Market. I'm hoping this will be a fine squash, even if not as good as Kabocha, at least as good as butternut, to use for recipes. At 33 cents a pound, $6.00 a monster squash, I figured it was some cheap food for the freezer or canner.

Thanks, I'll check it out. Always looking for great winter squash and that's a great price.

There is no telling if those seeds will grow what you bought. One way to find out though.
Last year I bought a few butternut squashes and saved the seeds. From those plants I had about 8 different butternut crosses. Not one plant had the same squash. There were eight different shapes and sizes. They all pretty much tasted alike though.

My opinion is that Buttercup is far better than butternut..but thats my taste..I also have Hercules Butternut and those are massive, but I am still trying to figure out if fairyTale and Rouge D'vif Entapes {Spelling?} are one in the same, and if not is one a maxima?

Fairytale is the common name for Musque de Provence and Cinderella is the common name for Rouge V'if Detamps. The former is a moschata and the latter is a maxima.

I think Musque de Provence is much better than Rouge V'if Detamps.

I have Musquee, and it looks nothing like the Fairy Tale I am looking at, Musquee is mottled, the latter isn't.
And has a smooth mahogony color, also, i have seen the ciderella offered from the same company and it was also offering Rouge on the next page? Hmmm? There in lies the confusion.

Well it wouldn't be unheard of for two pumpkins to have the same alias. But search Fairytale and you get MDP.
