"According to new research, produce in the U.S. not only tastes worse than it did in your grandparents' days, but also contains fewer nutrients. In fact, the average vegetable found in today's supermarket is anywhere from 5 percent to 40 percent lower in minerals such as magnesium, iron, calcium and zinc than those harvested just 50 years ago. Today's vegetables are larger, but do not contain more nutrients. Jumbo-sized produce actually contains more "dry matter" than anything else, which dilutes mineral concentrations. An additional problem is the "genetic dilution effect," in which selective breeding to increase crop yield has led to declines in protein, amino acids, and minerals. Breeders select for high yield, effectively selecting mostly for high carbohydrate content. And finally, as a result of the growing rise of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, modern crops are being harvested faster than ever before, meaning that produce has less time to absorb nutrients either from synthesis or the soil." |

I used to love Strawberries but stoped growing them because I hate to weed them. We picked them at a grower North of town for years then they closed up their farm and we had to buy them at the market. After buying those large beautiful store Strawberries I no longer like Strawberries they have a consistancy of cardboard are not juicy and have little taiste.

We have lots of local growers in California but unfortunately most of them grow the same horrible strawberries the grocery stores sell. Big as a baseball with little flavor and no sweetness.

I love strawberries but now I only have them if I grow them- due to allergies to something the big growers use on them. They are so tasteless that it is not worth buying them from the store.. my little funny shaped Ft. Larimes keep putting out berries all summer, not really big but so yummy! I might just make my strawberry bed bigger this summer!

We have u-pick strawberry places here and the berries are so delicious and cheap I don't grow them.
Grow those heirloom varieties in good, healthy organic soil! Not only are organic veggies and fruits better for you, but the taste of those older varieties is stronger; much more flavorful, I think.

I dunno. Seems if I add the same amount of sugar and yeast, and run everything else according to the same procedures, I still get a decent product.
