Welcome to our forums! This online gardening community is different, political, and organic. I decided to start these forums so gardeners would have a free place to discuss heirloom gardening, gene-altered food, seed saving, natural politics and products. We are dedicated to saving our food and horticultural heritage, and hope you enjoy this forum for the free-thinking gardener! Wishing you great gardening, Jere Gettle |

It has always seemed stupid to me that a person isn't allowed just a few chickens (hens only) as pets in the cities/towns instead of dogs. I like dogs but I'll tell you my chickens give eggs and fertilizer and rodent patrol and my dogs give me noise and grief most of the time.

I'm going to get a few for my Mom who lives in the city.
I think if I just get her hens, the neighbors shouldn't care. |

I'm not the typical 24 year old. I grow as much organic food for myself and my husband as I can. We generally have produce in excess that I give to friends and extended family. My parents are big gardeners and take care of themselves quite well. I do so much canning and I plan on making most of my own baby food once the baby we have on the way is able to eat solids. We have chickens and come spring/summer we're going to be getting goats. I grew up on a farm with a large garden, chickens, goats, and many other "lost" things for people in my age group. I'm so lucky to have my own farm now. NONE of my friends have any idea how to live off the land or even how to grow any type of food. They all say I'm so old for my age, but I'm just doing what I grew up with and love. I somehow managed to keep it up while being a full-time college student. Considering things can go bad at anytime I like to be prepared and know I can take care of my family. I just wish more young people would take the time to learn how to take care of themselves and be self-sufficient should the need come up. I'll be the first to admit that too many people my age seem to think that nothing bad can happen. I'm just afraid that that mentality is going to come back to bite them someday....

I'll second that. We have raccoons here in Des Moines that are literally knee high to me.

I am going to make her a little chicken tractor of chicken wire and PVC pipes with a shelter/nesting box on one end.
Something heavy enogh so coons can't get in but she or Dad can move around. I thought about putting folding caster wheels on it so when they need to move it they could just lift one end, pop out the wheels and then move it. |
