I just got a seed from a giant pumpkin grown last year, from the picture it must be 500lb,probably more. I have only grown pumpkins a few times with so-so- luck. Any tips I should know on growing a beast? I havent even planted yet still a little early around here. Thanks

I don't know anything about growing pumpkins, but last year I came across two larger-then-normal pumpkins, but no where near 500lbs. I mixed them in my mulch in an attempt to build-up the soil (sheet composting). Over the winter the seeds started sprouting, but then a cold-snap killed all the seedlings off. This happend two more times and then after all the coldsanps were over new seedlings emerged and now I got pumpkin plants growing all over the place and I think I see several pumpkins forming; One plant has even spread to the neighbors yard.
I've done nothing to them and they just grow, but I can see your concern since you only have one seed. Keep us updated. |

Work your soil good with straw, compost and manure. Plant the seed in a mound to promote good drainage. As the plant grows, continue to feed it regularly. And remember that pumpkin runners have roots and they need to be watered and fed as well in order to grow that large pumpkin. This is something I just recently stumbled across, and it makes sense.

This is a thread from a long time member here who has grown some pretty decent competition large pumpkins. It's step by step instructions on How-To. Good Luck.
