Hello
![]() I am looking for some saffron seeds. I figured that since they're the world's most expensive spice that it wouldn't hurt to add their variety to my garden. Thought I'd give this place a shot before purchasing online this time. If anyone has any saffron seeds for trade or purchase, I have seeds for the following: Heirloom Bloomsdale Long Standing Spinach Red Mini Sweet Bell Peppers Heirloom Paul Robeson Purple Tomato Heirloom Borage Heirloom Lemon Balm Heirloom Lavender |

Saffron comes from a certain crocus that should be blooming right now, some parts of the country places maybe already gone by now because of such a warm winter.....those little red threads inside the middle of the crocus flower is the saffron".....and I think there is only 3-4 threads in each flower....would take a LOT of those certain crocus's to get a fair amount of saffron....probably why it is so expensive to by in the store...try goggling "what kind of crocus for saffron threads", then order some of the crocus bulbs in the fall, plant them, and next spring you will have your own saffron threads.....

Yeah I read it takes somewhere near 50,000 - 75,000 individual flowers to provide one pound, worth $500-$5000. Would require a great deal of land! I wonder, could bulbs be planted in vertical systems?

My sister grows Saffron but I am still waiting to get some like you. She did not get as much as she wanted and this is her second year. It does produce only a few strands per plant. I do not know anyone around here growing it. For her, it is for the spice to cook with, as it is so expensive to buy! I do think it is wonderful to grow those spices if you can yourself!

Safron crocus flowers in late summer, not in the spring like most of the garden crocus plants. |
