A mysterious skin disease is currently spreading across America, and doctors are searching for answers on how to stop the epidemic.

The disease, called Morgellons Disease, is a parasite-like infection that literally makes the infected person's skin crawl. The disease has already been found in thousands of patients in Florida , Texas and California.

“I would lay in the bed and it felt like an army of ants just crawling over the bed, all over my body,” says one Morgellons Disease sufferer.

“It never goes away,” says another. “It doesn't die, it doesn't leave.”

What sounds like a science fiction movie is actually real life for the unlucky people who have contracted the disease which leaves painful sores all over the body. The sores ooze blue fibers, white threads and little black specks of sand-like material.

The worst part, patients say, is the creepy and constant sensation of bugs crawling under their skin.

The actual cause of Morgellons has yet to be found. The symptoms of the disease are remarkably similar to a disease that was discovered in 1600. When people in the United States began experiencing this disease,
researchers discovered a link to what was called Morgellons in the 1600’s. Whether or not these recent cases are indeed Morgellons Disease, the similarities are remarkable.

Transmission

Since many families experience the same symptoms, it is possible that human-to-human transmission is taking place. Other theories include parasites that live in dark, damp locations, such as under a kitchen sink, which invade humans as a second host or bite them, transferring the disease. This theory has yet to be proven, and more research is definitely necessary.

One physician who has successfully treated patients with Morgellons believes that the disease is caused by resistant bacteria known as Stenotrophomonas Maltophilia, that are commonly found near water.

Treatment

Some patients with Morgellons Disease have been assisted by antibiotics that treat Lyme Disease. This has given further credibility to the theories that the disease may be caused by a parasite.

Until a more conclusive answer for the cause of the disease is discovered, treatment options remain elusive. With more than 1,300 people in the United States currently suffering from Morgellons Disease, research is definitely necessary.

But are you really at risk from this mystery disease?

Many people scoff at the very idea that Morgellons poses a real risk. Instead they portray so-called patients as delusional or attention-seekers.

But before you jump to the same conclusion, consider the following: samples taken from the skin lesions of individuals claiming to be affected by Morgellons revealed the infestation of a wingless, arthropod insect called a springtail or collembola. Perhaps some exotic insect from a faraway place? Hardly. They can be found inside, in damp areas near sinks or leaky pipes, or outside in damp soil, near pools, ponds or other water sources.

Or consider that Morgellons Disease is suspected to be associated to other diseases that present similar symptoms, specifically Lyme borreliosis. Yes, the same Lyme disease that affected more than 23,000 people in 2005, through the simple bite of an infected tick.

There are very few things that are more frustrating than to know that you are sick - really sick - and have doctor after doctor tell you that is all in your head, or ask if you are depressed about anything. Or even worse, just write you a prescription for an antidepressant and a sleep aid, and tell you to come back in 2 months. And a blood test? Forget it...the HMO says your symptoms don't warrant it...
My heart goes out to these people - I hope someone finds the cause for this soon.
