Cindy and Pil,
A grow out (as explained to me) is when a seed company needs seeds for the next season, but in such small quantity (relatively) that commercial growers will not be interested in providing the isolation needed to insure proper pollination. This can also be determined by the climate that a grower can provide ... I am in a semi-arid zone 6b location and while Okra does well in the deep south with the humidity, an Okra acclimated to my area will provide gardeners with assurance of good performance in similar conditions.

Ann, you're not stupid!!!! I know 'cause I used to work for a seed company.
A growout is where you grow a large amount of a variety, say rattlesnake beans, for seed and then Baker Creek uses that crop. It is important that the crop is isolated from other varieties that would cross pollinate with them, when you are growing them for commercial use.

I'm not doing a grow out for B.C., but would be interested in hearing your Ideas on how you are growing various vegetables, fruits or flowers and what problems that you might have with what your growing.
I donated some pea seeds, so I'm interested in hearing from people who are doing grow outs on peas, not just the ones I donated as they may not be grown out this year, but from people who are growing some of the other Legumes this year. I'm doing my own grow out for myself and will be recording every little thing I find out about them from weather conditions, to pest and organic pest control, with photo's of the growing area and the plants. How does one get to do growouts for Baker Creek? Do you get paid or compensated? Heck even a gift certificate for seeds would be very cool!!!

You get free seeds, you get to eat the produce (except the seeds) and you get the company's undying gratitude. Works for me. Here's the first watermelon from my grow out just before I picked it this morning.
