Were your eggplants in direct sun all day? Maybe I should have some sunshade during the middle of the day....
I never planted kale until this year. My swiss chard does great all year. By the middle of July last summer, I was so sick of eating chard that I just let it grow. It got huge! Almost 5 feet tall! In fact, I have not tried regular spinach or collards here, either. But it does great in Colorado in the spring.... ![]() I grow New Zealand spinach here and it does well until at least mid-July. I don't know after that. It got so hot here the past two summers that I quit gardening for the most part in July. All I really kept up with were the peppers, tomatoes, and melons. Fulenn

Nope, the eggplants were not in direct sun all day - nothing in my garden is in direct sun all day. So maybe the sunshade would help you out.

I got my first seeds planted today. I took a small corner of my home office, put my seeds in my Dome, and have two heaters blowing on the Dome. I burnt up all my heating pads last year. I'll keep this heat ginning out until the seedlings pop out. Then the grow lights come on, and they will be very close (approx 3" above the seedlings).
I planted Carbon, Paul Robeson, & Black Sea Man. I'm hoping the Paul Robeson maters will be as good as everyone says. Carbons are my favorite, I was only going to grow Carbons this year, but had to try the Black Sea Man..... as well as the Paul Robeson. I'm dying to grow Amazon Chocolate in the standard leaf, but they are hard to find.

Oh my! That's a long list! I would run out of room. Its too early here for early planting of most veggies without lights, which I don't have yet. I have started some canna seed and bird of paradise seed but they take a long time to germinate. I am going to start a few other perennial and shrub seeds soon, also with long germination. I am trying to start early this year and do a little at a time so I am not so overwhelmed all at once when early veggie planting time comes.

We'll see if I'm in over my head, Sheryl.
![]() Good news is, many of my friends, family and co-workers garden as well. Should be plenty to go 'round this year. Just had some in my first flat begin to germinate and show. Caspian Pink were first. Not that it's significant, but it's interesting.

Also, Sheryl, if your budget affords it, big box hardware stores have incredibly inexpensive fluorescent lighting fixtures that you can usually use with the lights that come with the kit. Might be worth looking into.
