I was reading the thread on the gerbera dasies and Helen made a comment about them overwintering for her, and my first question was, "Would they overwinter for me?" Alas, Helen does not have her LOCATION field in her profile filled out, so I don't know whether they would overwinter for me.
I know a lot of folks have put their State and Hardiness Zones in their profile and I find that very helpful as I read their posts. If everyone would be so kind as to add that to their profile, I think many of us would find that a great help. If you don't want to enter your state, maybe you could just put the hardiness zone in for us. TIA! Last edited by Sandbar; December 9th, 2006 at 10:52 PM.. |

Sandbar, sorry that I didn't put my hometown and state because many of us are playing "secret santa". I am probably in Zone 9 and some say Zone 10 - who knows. If you get snow than gerbera daisies might be a bit cold for you unless it's in a pot and you can move it inside. I usually move the pot under my potting table and put a plastic covering on it so that it doesn't get too cold and die.

NP, Helen, thanks for letting me know your zone. I found a website that lets you put in your zipcode and it tells you your hardiness zone. Here's a link:

OK According to the link, I am also 5a. So I changed my profile. I still think the conditions here are closer to zone 4. We average at least 9 ft of snow per yr and it is very windy. This is part of the snowbelt. There is a ski area less than 15 mi from here.
Sandbar, how much snow you think you will get in a yr ? Since we are in the same zone, I am wondering how similar our conditions really are. |

I'm in 5a in Illinois. Normally we don't get too much snow. Nasty snow storms, but not snow on a constant basis. It's more bitterly cold and windy. I would worry less about overwintering my plants if I had a nice regular layer of snow to blanket them, but the wind and bitterly cold temps have me worried. I may be doing some major mulching next winter when I have more plants in to get through the winter.

My town is called Summit. We get snow alot of days during the winter. I went down the mtn yesterday. I had 4 in of snow at my house. Drive 3 mi, descend maybe 400 ft. There is absolutely no snow on the ground. Elevation plays a big part in the weather here. There is also lots of heavy fog in the summer.
