Michelle.. just for future reference when you do get ready to send some in. Here's what i'm gonna be putting on the template. You'll need the harvest date, description of the plants.. and preferably a picture or several of the mature plants and fruits. I'll trade you pictures of one month old seedlings after i do the germination test for the pictures of the mature plants. If you want i can even trial them for you next year with some different voulenteers of mine in different parts of the country.. and try to verify whether it's true to type or not for ya. But that i haven't set up yet.
Ok.. back to descriptions.. i want plant height, leaf type, determinate or indeterminate.. det=2, and Ind=5 branches between blossom sets; Days to maturity as near as you can estimate.. early, mid, late season.. or mid-late.. whatever you want to call it.. it's your seeds. Then of course descriptions of the productiveness.. very productive, heavy fruitset, light, whatever.. anything.. i usually say 7-10 fruits per cluster. It does make a difference to me how many.. may not to you. Anyways.. then i count the seed chambers inside one of em. Is it a beefsteak type or regular locules? I put down an average.. for example 2-3 locoles from a salad type.. to maybe 24-30 from some beefsteak types. Belevie me it's the only way i can tell some of them apart is by how many seed chambers they have... so that's why it's important to me. Skin color and flesh type of course.. use your own observations.. and of course taste test.. you'll have to sample one for me and write down your description of it. And finally i use a rating system.. 1-3 stars.. if it's incredible maybe a 4 star sometimes. Since i don't have the template made up for the check off the answers yet.. you'll just have to remember what you can. I'd apprecaite it if you'd write it all on a piece of copy paper.. heavier bond the better.. in ball point ink that won't bleed when sitting in tomato juice for a week and then fold it to go into a 2X3" baggie along with the fresh squeezed seeds from 4 or more tomatoes. Whatever you can fit in there and still seal it up.. no juice required.. no pulp.. definately no skins or stems.. and then send that to me.. of course the cleaner you get em before you mail em.. the more you can squeeze into each baggie. Tape it up though just to be sure.. or use your own judgement such as an empty pill bottle if you're paranoid bout it breaking. I'd just use a bubble mailer myself.. there's no juice.. it's not any big deal if they do break open.. so long as it's only one. But, that's kinda weird right.. me asking you to do all that work.. i would do it if i were there.. but i can't. So that's what i'd write on a label. You ok with that? Dave |

Anyone have any suggestions as to whether i should make the labels out of velium or some sort of paper like that to put in the finished packets? This one wouldn't be getting wet unless you used it out in the garden. It wouldn't have to be waterrepellent like the original lable made out of copy paper. It'd cost me more though.. but might look better and be more functional.. any ideas.. cause it will make a difference when the graphics are printed on there.. i do have that capability to put your pictures on the labels now.. just i haven't got the supplies yet. And the template isn't finished yet... when it is i'll have a space to put your photos.

Ok.. i got the packaging worked out.. hired another person i think.. we'll see tommorrow. but i'm still waiting on templates for anyone who wants to use that instead of a blank piece of copy paper to write on. Don't matter to me.. but what you put in with the seeds is what you get back from me. If you want packaging that can be arranged..germination test i'll do anyways.. so that's thrown in. any breeders want to play mad scientist with GA i'll throw that in for extra. Just contact me here where i can find ya.. all my PM boxes are full right now and i don't have time to check all those.
If you want yellow seeds i'll make em yellow.. if you want grey.. well that's what you got. I use UV rays so they'll all be grey. Dave |

Ok... folks.. if anyone is interested.. here's the labels i want you to fill out for me. I'll have a stock of blank ones made up or you can just hand write your own info just for the fermenting part. Or you can check out my label design in my photo album... see what you want for yours.

AG, I;ll take you up on your 10/1 horse trade whenever my tomatoes get ripe- they're still babies in my climate. I'm jealous of those of us who already have ripe ones! I've only got 5 varieties, but it'll be fun to try some new ones next year- must be short season tho, I can't put out transplants till mid may, and killer frost in mid october, but I'm willing to try new stuff

Sure Lal.. as many as you want.. i have over 3000 varieties of tomatoes i can choose from.. we'll have to check to make sure you don't get duplicates for some you already have so i'll get a list of some of the ones i have the most of.. unless you have any requests and i can find them ahead of time and set em aside for you.
Don't feel bad i'm down to around a hundred or so varieties i'm growing myself this year. I **** near killed off 3 times that many seedlings this year. Just wasn't a great year for me either. So as many of those baggies as you want to fill.. you could probably get 16 or more in one bubble mailer. As i said.. i'll take and ferment all you want to send. Just i'll need to get you to fill out some info for me and put it in the baggies. Do you have 2x3" ziplocs? If not i can figure out how many are in a sandwich bag if you have that many of one variety. Just i don't use those sizes in my operation very much. Most of the larger size ones i do are 3x4 inch or less. Can't explain why.... but that's just the system that works best for me. Anyways.. i'm here if anyone wants to arrange a trade for later on in the season. I'll be collecting seed from around a hundred of my own varieties in about a month or less.. so let me know. Dave |

And to think, AG, a couple of years ago when we traded you told me you were a beginner!

All times are GMT -5. The time now is 12:15 AM.

I have 40 different varieties and they are way to close to consider saving seeds from right now.
