I'll try and will some of the rain we're getting your way Sheryl. Last week I took deliver of a couple yards of composted manure. Unfortunately I just managed to fill my tom bed and it's been mud ever since. Plus, rain is in the forecast so I won't be able to start filling the rest of the beds until the middle of next week.
I did get my pea bed filled and planted. Also, my front yard beds have the more cold-hardy stuff in already and I noticed this morning that the beets, carrots and salsify have sprouted. I've also laid out some mulch around the front yard beds since that can at least be done in the rain.

Planted Vardaman, Centennial, and Georgia Jet varities of sweet potatoes today. My first try with sweet potatoes. I built a raised bed 18 inches tall for them. Mulched with leaf mold compost.

I can't get over how much warmer Michigander's zone 4 is right now than my zone 6. Later this week our night lows should be up to 40 or low 40. All I did today was pull more weeds for a couple more small plots and plot extensions. No way can I direct seed those hot season crops yet.

Went out to check the damage from three very heavy, hard downpours since last night ... another 2" of rain today, on top of the 2" last night, and the 6" last weekend. My poor garden has silted-in in several spots ... areas where I will need to level the soil out. I had tried to cup the center of the bed so that it would help retain moisture in the heat of our hot, hot summers, but ended up crowning it instead which was lucky. There is only one corner of corn that has shown silt, but that corner also had 4" of standing water in it an hour after the rain this morning. It did better after the afternoon rain.
All this rain is great for my garden, but it is also encouraging caterpillers ... I pulled another 4 green caterpillers off of my peas this evening after the rain. I did find that gently brushing my hands from the bottom up through the pea vines caused the caterpillers to fall off, and by watching the soil, you can get them easily. Other than that, there wasn't any noticable damage. I'll have to get out tomorrow and get some weeding done, tho ... plenty of those coming up with all this rain LOL They still can't keep up with the vegies, tho

Yesterday I planted four little artichoke plants that came up from seed in the pankar-huyu area. Planted some fresh bush cherry pits in little flats (plastic strawberry boxes), just to see if they come up. Just walked around and looked at everything ...
Today, I will plant my three leafed-out sweet potatoes. And figure out what to do with snow peas, picked a bunch yesterday. I like simple. Found this link to a "minimalist" recipe for snow peas; I think I'm somewhat of a "minimalist" too: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/30/di...prod=permalink

I installed new gutter and downspouts on the back of my house with a rainwater collection system. Plenty of free water for the garden this summer..

[QUOTE=hikingonthru;533549] Basil is growing right well, but I cannot get cilantro to do for me for nothing (anyone got a trick?).
I start mine in a 8-10 inch pot. |

Will try it in the pot. Got me 3 peppers (bell, cubanelle and sweet banana) yesterday and ate them up in the garden. Basil is going gangbusters...cukes are starting to take off even though I was late starting them. About ready to pull my garlic for the year....only 100 bulbs worth. That will take us about 7-9 months, but it is $50 in savings. Gonna set out some sweet taters. Okra is swimming along.
