I'm rediscovering dill, I seem to not be able to use it enough right now. And, basil. I would buy it from the store and it would die in a week. But, I started growing some under my lights earlier this year and it was just like a weed...unstoppable. I am so happy with my basil, that I'm thinking about making mini, live, herb baskets for some of my family around Christmas to help bring some green into their kitchens.

Thanks for all you inputs. Some of your herbs I use too, some have heard of, some are totally new. I did not know vervain was verbena, which I do grow.
To add to my list, I grew fennel for the first time last year, love the anise fragrance, let it come back and found it to be very invasive. Also was expecting lots of swallowtail butterflies from all the caterpillars and cryssalis, but that did not happen. |

growing dill for first time this year-to my great consternation-pollinators are YELLOWJACKETS!-no bees on the dill at all, the bees are all over the tall oregano right next to the dill though. (oh, I discovered ladybugs love the dill too!). I could do without the yellowjackets-who knew?

Flowerluver... I purchased Shiso Britton, on a whim, from Johnny's Selected Seeds. I was pleasantly surprised at how pretty it is. It's also one of the few herbs that thrives in my shady, front yard bed. I grew Green Shiso as well, but I prefer the flavor of Britton.
I use the smaller leaves in Asian curries, soups and stir fries. The leaves are used in Japanese pickling recipes, too (I have not tried that yet, though). The flavor is hard for me to describe... leaning towards licorice/anise, perhaps. |
