Grew the Mexican Marigolds one summer. Decided not to grow it again. Didn't particularly care for the undercover cop, that circled the block twice, and slowed down, both times, to give the plants a good hard look. If a cop thought it looked like something "interesting", made me concerned that the local free-ranging kids would think the same and raid the yard.

Just thought i'd give a head's up about that.

I think the kids would know way better than that cop what the plants were suppose to look like and not bother with your marigolds, lol. They are not that similar. Now if it was Hibiscus cannabinus you were growing, that might fool quite a few people from a distance!

That's a common name for just about all of the Tagetes.

i saw a pic that looked like what i grew, but danged if i can find it again, Luvs. When the seed was given to me, all i was told was it was Mexican Marigold. No other name. What i think drew the cops attention is the somewhat similar growth pattern. Height, width, placement of leaves and such. From about 40 feet, and in a moving car, something must've just caught his eye, 'cause he did circle the block and slow down the 2nd time for a good look. Must have passed, though, as i never heard anything.

As far as the free-ranging kids, there's no tellin' what will draw their interest. No doubt they'd know it wasn't pot, when they got a look at it, but it would draw their attention. [we already have a small problem keeping them off the property]

That's what the leaves looked like, so i'm going to guess that what i was given was T. minuta. Tiny little flowers, right?

And i can believe it's a noxious weed. Grew it here 3 years ago and i'm still finding seedlings coming up. It did work as a trap plant for borers of some kind, though. Like the boring worms you'll find in goldenrod. [the ones fisher folks say are good bait]
