Sorry, but if you use a fertilizer with low nitrogen like Gardentone or Tomatotone your plants will produce and not become bushy. I stopped using miracle grow all together and use Espoma products. Stinks like poop but sure does wonders for the plants. As for not fertilizing on a hot day or when its going to rain, IDK, it never seems to adversly effect my plants..
