There is a new product for sale in one of our local grocery chains - compost! The compost is made of over 25 fruits and vegetables. All the material is food waste collected from grocery stores and recycled. The brochure stresses that it contains "no poop". They also have a potting mix which is a combination of the compost, perlite, and coco coir. Clean Earth Soils is the brand name. The price is around $6.00 for a 1 cu.ft. bag - about the same as a bag of Miracle Grow. I don't know if other grocers in other areas are carrying this or not.
What a great idea ! It would be interesting to see if any seeds survive the composting process and produce volunteer plants. I'm going to talk to my local grocer and see if I can get his fruit and vegetable waste. He already sells me garlic that has started to sprout at half price, and I have just gotten some ginger root that is starting to sprout. From their brochure: "Americans throw out over 30 million tons of food every year. This is enough to fill the Rose Bowl Stadium once every three days with nothing but food. Decomposing food fills up one-fourth of our landfills and produces almost as much greenhouse gas as all the cars being driven." The brochure also contains some basic information on composting and encourages people to have their own compost piles. web site CleanEarthSoils.com |

Doesn't surprise me. Is another way for them to boost profit margin and so many people have gone to patio/driveway gardening- including these. Just lay it down pop some holes and stick your plants in. Many things will grow this way and if all one has is a 3' x 6' Patio it's perfect.
