Re: Saving seeds from fruit eaten
If you bought the peach, then it doesn't "cost nothing," and if you're going to continue buying peaches for 7 years while you wait, you will likely spend more than the less than $20 that a grafted...

Re: Saving seeds from fruit eaten
Yes but it would take over 7 years for your peach seedling to produce fruit. Many who grow from seed try to find trees that will grow in their climate and fruit in three or fewer years.

Yes, thanks for the links Nullzero; I'm going to order seeds, as this sounds like a very promising but undemanding tree for windy spots on my property.

Re: Soil:A Community of Life
Yes, there is a reason why herbicides were turned to; because the chemical industry wanted to make profits off the new toxics it invented during world war II. A very easy option to suppress weeds is...

Re: What did you do in your garden today?
Today I spent a good amount of time hand-pollinating the melons in my greenhouse, and then became annoyed when I realized that the culantro/vietnamese coriander that I thought I was having such good...

Re: Pepino, 2010 harvest
nullzero, sadly I don't. I only vegetatively cloned the best variety from my seedlings and then those plants all died after one more season. I don't think seeds ever give a stable pepino cultivar,...

Re: Blueberry Bushes
Pine is a fine mulch for blueberries, but it does not acidify the soil. You need to add the sulphur. Since I grow in raised beds, I also added a great deal of peat moss where I was planting the...

Oh, I wasn't directing my comments about jicama to you personally, just sharing what I know about the crop with the thread since I am familiar with it locally.

Re: Having a hard time finding these herbs!
Other than lime basil and spearmint, the varieties you list are propagated by cuttings only, as they won't grow true from seeds. You can mail-order the plants from Territorial Seeds, but I've always...

Re: Yacon information sharing
Thanks, I'll try that out.
Regarding jicama's, they aren't very similar at all to yacon. The jicama is grown from seed and produces just one root, which is very crunchy even when cooked and has...

I hope you can get a pollinator. Kiwi is generally unhappy in Hawaii so the plants aren't sold here, but it's too acidic for me anyway.

Re: Apples and Peaches flowering
Generally stone fruits perform very well in the upper regions of Hawaii; most famously on Kauai where there are groves of very old, wild plum trees that you need a permit to pick from. The cultivars...

Can you tell me what method you use for cuttings? I have four plants in the ground right now and am interested to see if I can make more plants for this season.

Yes, the nectarine tree I planted in the ground last spring is now flowering, setting fruit and putting on leaves. I had expected it to wait longer, but since the lowest it gets is the mid-forties...

I'll keep white sugar lump in mind. Good to know you had great success with early moonbeam--the yellow color and great taste should sell well.

Early Moonbean Watermelon
Has anyone grown this melon before? I got the seed from seeds of change and I selected it as a yellow-fleshed watermelon that was supposed to be good for the north, and thus also high-elevation...

Re: I Grew a PASSIONFRUIT!!!!!
I'm growing a purple passion fruit vine right now; I've only had it for six months, but it's grown up our fence-trellis, and I hope one day it will produce something. I'm glad yours did.

Re: Let my orangeglo go too long!
Oh yes, watermelon juice is excellent; including the rind and seeds makes it more nutritious. You can also just put the flesh in a blender and then run it through a strainer for a good drink.

Good articles; I recently tried to grow some jujube trees from seed, but they all fissled out quite early on. It probably doesn't get hot enough for them in the summer here, anyway.

Corexit is most certainly a highly dangerous poison that was pumped into the gulf in insanely unsafe levels as a PR tool for BP to pretend the oil is gone. I think it highly possible that people in...

Re: What will you do different next year?
Plant less tomatoes, wait until the sweet potato cuttings are bigger before planting out, and doing something about these raised beds are my plans, except instead of next year, it's just now.
