Re: Poll: Where do you live?

I recently moved from Wyoming to middle Tennessee. I am trying to start a produce garden and have greenhouses. I have had all sorts of problems from the planning commision to weather to money. My wife and I will get through this and we'll have a business. This site will also be a great help. We're sure.shadowwalker37148

No one else from Michigan???? I'm surprised!! Lots of farming around here. I live in "town" so my garden is modest, mostly herbs and a few veggies (besides me). I live on the west side of the Great Lakes state. I've been around gardening (organic) since childhood and even when things were tough, we at least had a tomato in a pot!

I'm a somewhat new gardener on my own, and I just got my very own roto-tiller, so things will be even better. Now that I have found a good source of heirloom seeds I plan on having nothing but next year!

I'm near Boulder, Colorado, and am primarily a Tomato Geek - although I love playing around with all sorts of unusual fruits/veggies, as well as peppers and eggplant.

My biggest challenge this year is building a garden fence that is capable of standing up to a most unruly afghan hound and an assortment of rescued desert tortoises...

Re: Poll: Where do you live?

Springfield, Missouri is where I hail from. Grew up in this area as did my wife. We moved to town from the country back in the late 70's due to work. I'm a few years away from retirement and want to move back to the country but I'm afraid to say my wife has turned citified on me. She doesn't want to move back! It's a real bummer as we've been married over 31 years and I'll miss her. :) I like all kinds of gardening and I am interested in the whole spectrum of self-sufficient living. Everything from living off of the grid to collecting rain water . . . you name it and I'll listen. Thank you for this forum.

I'm in Indiana, zone 5. My dad was an avid gardener and passed the green thumb along to me. Since the kids are grown and have left the nest, our garden is not that big, but we try to have a little bit of a lot of different fruits and veggies...the favorite being tomatoes, of course. :)

Re: Poll: Where do you live?

I live in Ft. Smith, AR...zone7. When I was younder my parents and I used to put in a garden every year but after I moved away they eventually stopped and I never picked it up again til this year. My boyfriend and I originally thought it'd be a good way to save $ on getting veggies for our guinea pigs/iguana and bunny...now its turned into stuff we like and a massive pepper explosion.
We love going to gardening centers and while he is looking for flowers I am milling over veggies and fruit. We did get some very odd looks to begin with but after going there 2-3 times a week they got used to it! I suppose kids that look like us aren't so much into the gardening thing (weird hair/piercings etc) and well, thats just sad because its so theraputic!
We are also (when not at our factory jobs) active in animal rescue, particularly Mastiffs and Bully breeds (Bulldogs, Pit Bulls, Boston Terrier...etc). They get a pretty bad rap, so we alway root for the under"dog".
Someday we hope to have a larger yard to till up and make into a garden but right now we have about a 20 ft x 10 ft space (tilled, the rest is still a yard) plus all our potted/bucketed stuff. I guess considering we live in the middle of the city its pretty impressive (so I'm been told). But it reminds me of all the Grandma's house's in the cities/towns I have seen....stuff growing everywhere!
Well that's enough, boy I can ramble, can't I?!
Btw, its great to see other Arkies on here :D

Re: Poll: Where do you live?

I live on the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay in a beautiful little town called Fairhope that began as a socialist, single tax colony in the late 1800's. It is now a cute and rich tourist destination, but it is still beautiful and retains lots of its original charm. It is just about 30 degree north latitude, so we get lots of hot sun. I garden in very well drained, acidic silica sand. Though my beds are well amended, it still feels somewhat like hydroponic gardening due to the rapid drainage. The drainage is a good thing though, because we get between 80 and 90 inches of rain a year. I am pretty obsessed with tomatoes and give them most of my tlc, but that are many other beautiful things in my garden as well.
I would love to hear from anyone who has a similar gardening situation.
