Lyme Fact Sheet Whether it is a single bite or multiple bites from one tick, the human host is exposed to more than one bacterium. Spirochete Borrelia Burgdorferi, which causes Lyme, is the primary gram-negative bacterium that is transferred by an arthropod tick vector. Antibiotics must be taken immediately following a tick bite, or if antibiotics are not administered properly there will be consequences down the road. Anyone who has been bitten by a Bb infected tick, who was not properly treated, risks illness which may manifest immediately, or at some other time triggered by some innocuous seemingly unrelated event.

Discovery of the arthropod vector is difficult due to the size of the disease carrier. Sometimes a victim is bitten in an odd spot. And, get this; a person who has been bitten by an infected tick may not always have that tell-tell EM rash, or the Erythema migrams. Some people never have a rash. But they will have fatigue, malaise, muscle pain, gut and bladder symptoms, sensory aberrations, bizarre neurological abnormalities, and brain fog or memory problems. Cognition is royally messed up. Most people see a plethora of specialists ranging from head shrinkers, neurologists, immune specialists, family practice physicians—you name it before they ever connect the dots and suspect Lyme.

It is imperative that this person sees a Lyme literate MD. Time is precious in this disease process. Individual symptoms that seem unrelated are treated, but people never see symptom resolution. The test for Lyme doesn’t always reveal Lyme infection. The test focuses on a single strain of bacterium, B 31, which is responsible for arthritic symptoms.[/B]

There are twelve known genospecies; one of these has over one hundred US strains, while there are over three hundred strains in other parts of the world (none of which are in “the test). So the test rarely shows Lyme infection, less than one out of two has a positive test. So don’t be hung up on “the test.” Due to testing problems the CDC has advised physicians based on clinical symptomology to diagnose Lyme. The purpose of the test is for statistical purposes to report an incident to the CDC. If you have had any of the clinical symptoms I have alluded to, then suspect Lyme. Find a doctor who will actively peruse an aggressive treatment plan such as a Lyme literate MD.

This may not be the case with an immunologist. You may be wasting precious time consulting with one, especially if he doesn’t share a LLMDs vision of Lyme treatment. If individual symptoms, which no one has connected to Lyme, are treated, and nothing happens—it is still critical for that person to see a LLMD. If Antibiotic therapy is started, and there is a response (either negative like herxheimer, or positive where the patient feels better) there is a high chance that this person is indeed infected by Lyme. There is an even greater chance that the victim is infected by another Lyme bacterium, which isn’t detected by “the test.”

Bb is a cleaver adaptive pleomorphic organism very capable of adjusting itself to any environment especially when it is threatened while residing in the human host. The clever thing may go to ground as a cyst hiding in inaccessible parts of the human body. It can hide to avoid detection. Bb interferes with many body functions like the gut, bladder, brain, musculo-skeletal system. It flourishes in brain tissue causing decline in any imaginable ways including cognition. The destruction is evident in ways apparent to the infected person, or their family. Due to this, sometimes the mental decline caused by Lyme is mistaken for other diseases such as Alzheimer’s, MS or ALS.

There have been three NIH clinically controlled studies that have evaluated long-term antibiotic treatment (opposed it, for it, and inconclusive results). The ILADS et al have detailed these studies. Know this, there is confusion and controversary over Lyme treatment when it comes to long-term antibiotics.

Currently the treatment guidelines developed by the CDC, IDSA (Infectious Disease Society of America) and insurance companies call for a 30-day treatment of chronic Lyme. Note that not all bastions of medical learning, such as the vernable UVA recognize that there is an entity known as chronic Lyme. UVA does not recognize chronic LD.

Notably there have been no studies that show that a 30-day course of antibiotics is all that effective, most of the time it isn’t effective. There is a 40% relapse rate, especially if the less than educated illiterate doctor unversed in current Lyme research, delays treatment. The ILADS (International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society) advocates a separate treatment protocol. Since there is no real test, this should not be used to deny a person treatment. LD is a clinical diagnosis, so a test should support that diagnosis and not override a doctor’s judgment. The early use of antibiotics can prevents resistant, recurrent and refractory Lyme disease. The duration of treatment should be based on clinical response, not on a one-size-fits-all arbitrary insurance company cost driven pronouncement
